Calls for New Era in Transatlantic Unity To Advance Peace
President Bush has called for a new era of unity in transatlantic
relations to seize a historic moment of opportunity to advance
peace, democracy and prosperity around the world. Speaking February
21 in Brussels, Belgium, Bush cited the special role the alliance of
the United States and Europe has to play in the world -- as the main
pillar of security, the engine of the economy and a beacon of hope
for poor and oppressed. "As past debates fade, as great duties
become clear, let us begin a new era of transatlantic unity," he
said.

Supports More NATO Discussion of Strategic Political Issues
The United States agrees with other NATO members that the
alliance needs to be an organization where political, as well as
military and strategic issues should be freely discussed, President
Bush told reporters in Brussels. In a February 22 joint press
conference with the president following the NATO Summit,
Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the government leaders
talked at length about a stronger role for the alliance in
discussions of key political questions surrounding operations and
missions.

President Bush and Chancellor Schröder Discuss Partnership
President Bush and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder called
on Iran February 23 to give up its nuclear weapons program.

In a joint news conference after their
meeting in Mainz, Germany, Bush and Schroeder also said Syria must
withdraw not only its troops but also its secret services from
Lebanon. Regarding Iraq, climate change and NATO, the two leaders
said they focused during their talks on areas of agreement rather
than past disagreements.

"The United States and Germany are
working together on a variety of projects to improve energy security
and reduce pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions, according to a
joint statement issued by the two nations February 23 as President
Bush visited Germany in the second stop of his three-nation European
tour. A shared goal of the bilateral initiatives is to assist
developing nations in the pursuit of economic expansion and poverty
reduction by identifying energy sources that are more abundant and
more affordable, the statement says.

Putin Address Concerns About Russian Democracy
Questions about Russia's democratic
development figured prominently in the summit meeting between
President Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin and their
subsequent press conference in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, February
24. Bush told journalists that in his conversation with Putin "I was
able to share my concerns about Russia's commitment in fulfilling
these universal principles of democracy. I did so in a constructive
and friendly way. I reaffirmed my belief that it is democracy and
freedom that bring true security and prosperity in every land.
