African Union looks to long-term cooperation with NATO The African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Said Djinnit, visited NATO HQ on 2 March, the second high-level visit by an African Union official to NATO. more

High-level talks to focus on enhancing NATO-Russia defense cooperation Defense and military experts from NATO member countries and Russia met in Vilnius on 28 February to share views on opportunities and challenges in deepening NATO-Russia defense cooperation, in particular in enhancing the ability of Russian and NATO forces to work together in military operations. more

European Missile Defense Would Protect Against Mideast Threats  Although the United States advocates placing limited missile defense capabilities in Europe, a senior U.S. government nonproliferation expert says it has no interest in sparking an arms race with Russia. Discussions with Poland and the Czech Republic entail deployment of “a purely defensive system,” says U.S. Assistant Secretary of State John Rood. This would put 10 missile interceptors and tracking radar sites in Central Europe to defend against Middle Eastern threats. The U.S. objective for limited missile defenses in Europe “is to optimize the defensive coverage of both Europe and the United States,” Rood said during a February 27 speech in London. more

Afghanistan

Afghan women officials visit NATO Thirteen Afghan women officials - from the Wolesi Jirga (Afghan Lower House of Parliament), the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Women’s Affairs and Commerce and Industry - visited NATO, 28 February - 1 March. more

Cheney, Afghan President Review Progress in War Against Taliban Afghan President Hamid Karzai, during Vice President Cheney’s recent visit to Kabul, Afghanistan, expressed increased optimism about progress in the war against the Taliban, according to a senior administration official. more

Reconstruction progress in Afghanistan It may only be a 150-meter flood protection wall outside Dumlam Village in Laghman Province, but its completion 21 Feb. signified a turning point in an area once gripped by extremists. Since the establishment of Security Base Najil last December, many villagers have turned their backs on extremists, enabling more reconstruction in northern Alishang District. The permanent presence of Afghan National Army and ISAF troops has improved security in the area and given local people new hope in the government. more

Iraq Security Plan Can Work, But Will Take Time A new strategy that puts U.S. and Iraqi forces inside Baghdad neighborhoods to safeguard residents against insurgent and sectarian violence can work, but it will take time to be fully implemented, the top U.S. military commander in Iraq said in Baghdad during his first news conference today. more
