NATO Head Visits Washington

NATO Secretary General Visit PRESIDENT BUSH: Mr. Secretary General, thanks for coming. We've just had a wide-ranging discussion on a variety of issues, which is what you'd expect when allies and friends come together. We discussed Iraq, and I want to thank NATO for its involvement in helping train Iraqi security forces so they can end up protecting the Iraqi people from the -- from those who want to kill innocent life in order to affect the outcome of that democracy. I want to thank you very much for your strong involvement in Afghanistan. A NATO presence in Afghanistan is really important.  NATO was effective, and that's one of the things that really important for our citizens to understand, that our relationship with NATO is an important part of helping us to win the war on terror. We also talked about Darfur and the Sudan. more

NATO Expands its Role Outside of Europe NPR: Morning Edition: [...] No firm date has been set, but NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is getting ready to expand its role in Afghanistan. About 6,000 new NATO troops are expected to arrive in the country by this summer. They’re part of an effort to help Afghanistan’s government expand its reach. [...] more

AFGHANISTAN

NATO Troops Secure Large Cache of Munitions in Afghanistan More than 15,000 munitions and explosives found in old Afghan bunkers –- the largest cache ever discovered in Afghanistan – will soon be destroyed, according to a State Department announcement. The entire stockpile of land mines, tons of dynamite, and other explosives and detonators are now in the possession of NATO troops that make up the International Security Assistance Force. more

Energy Secretary, Central Europe Counterparts Meet in Hungary The importance of advancing sufficient, affordable, clean and reliable energy supplies was the subject of discussions among U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman and his Central European counterparts during a March 17 meeting in Budapest, Hungary. more

U.S., NATO Outlining Priorities for November Summit in Latvia NATO’s top priority for its November summit in Latvia is ensuring the 26-nation military alliance succeeds after taking over security operations throughout Afghanistan, a senior U.S. diplomat says. Kurt Volker, deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, outlined several main topics to be discussed when NATO heads of state meet November 28-29 in Riga, Latvia. Volker listed the priorities during a March 28 speech at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. more

U.S. Military Realignment

U.S. Forces Leaving Iceland, Army Closing Luxembourg Site The U.S. has notified Iceland of plans to remove U.S. forces from the North Atlantic island nation by the end of September, and the Defense Department announced its departure from a storage site in Luxembourg. Both moves are part of a regional and global repositioning of U.S. forces. Several thousand U.S. troops also are departing Germany in 2006, but small operating bases and outposts are being opened in Romania, Bulgaria and elsewhere to reflect changes in global threats. more
