NATO SEC. GEN. VISITS U.S.

U.S., NATO Committed to Afghanistan Security in Afghanistan, Kosovo’s future and European missile defense figured prominently in discussions between President Bush and NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer during a two-day meeting at the president’s ranch in Crawford, Texas. “The secretary-general of NATO has been a strong advocate of fighting terror, spreading freedom, helping the oppressed and modernizing this important alliance,” Bush told reporters at a joint press appearance May 21.

US-RUSSIA

U.S. Secretary of State Concludes Intensive Diplomacy in Russia Policy differences over European-based missile defense and the future of Kosovo should not overshadow the strength of the common interests underlying U.S.-Russian relations, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says after a two-day visit to Moscow. “We have a lot that is going right in the relationship,” Rice said at a May 15 press roundtable, but “overheated rhetoric” obscures the fact that the United States and Russia are cooperating closely on nonproliferation and counterterrorism efforts -- including sharing of information and intelligence -- as well as engaging in multilateral diplomacy on Iran, North Korea and the Middle East peace process. more

U.N. Security Council Begins Debate on Kosovo Resolution The United States and Europe have submitted a preliminary draft resolution to the U.N. Security Council that would set the groundwork for internationally supervised independence for Kosovo, a move that senior U.S. diplomat R. Nicholas Burns says is “inevitable.” more

Bush Names Army General as Senior Advisor for Iraq, Afghanistan Today, President Bush Named Lt. General Douglas Lute As Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for Iraq and Afghanistan. In that position, Lt. General Lute is charged with coordinating the efforts of the Executive Branch to support our commanders and senior diplomats on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan. more

Rice Discusses Gaza Violence with Palestinian, Israeli Leaders Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert May 17 to express U.S. concern over factional violence in the Gaza Strip that has left scores of people dead in less than a week. more

United States Calls for an End to Gaza Violence The United States is calling on rival Palestinian factions to end the violence plaguing the Gaza Strip. “We're concerned about the violence in Gaza,” State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said at a May 16 briefing. “We want to see that stop.” The eruption in violence comes two months after the parties entered into a Saudi-brokered national unity government. more
