G8 SUMMIT

G8 Countries Agree on Process To Address Global Warming Leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) countries have agreed on an accelerated process that eventually can lead to “substantial” cuts in emissions that contribute to global warming. Calling climate change an “urgent challenge,” the leaders called on the countries that are heavy users of energy and emitters of greenhouse gases to establish by the end of 2008 a new global framework for dealing with emissions of these gases.  more

Ideals of Democracy Universal, Bush Says  The ideals of democracy are universal, and democracies have an obligation to promote them as a foundation for peace and prosperity, President Bush says. “We appreciate that free societies take shape at different speeds in different places,” Bush said at a democracy forum in Prague, the Czech Republic, June 5. However, fundamental freedoms of speech, religion, the press and assembly, as well as the rule of law, an independent judiciary, private property rights and political parties competing in free and fair elections are critical elements found in any democracy, he said. more | Bush at Conference on Democracy, Security in Prague, Czech Republic

White House Welcomes Russian Missile Defense Offer President Bush welcomed an offer from Russian President Vladimir Putin that could transform a dispute over a proposed European missile defense system into a new partnership opportunity for Washington and Moscow. Meeting on the sidelines of the Group of Eight Summit in Heiligendamm, Germany, Putin proposed sharing data from a Soviet-era air-defense radar system operated by Russia in Azerbaijan. more

Bush Stresses Need for Strong U.S.-Russian Relations Although the complexity of the U.S.-Russian relationship has at times led to disagreements, the two countries should maintain open relations and work together on a variety of issues including nonproliferation, energy and climate change, President Bush says. more

Democracies Must Speak Out for Democratic Practices, Rice Says  Democratic countries have an obligation "to speak out for democratic practices," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says.
