US-EU Summit

Promoting the Advance of Freedom and Democracy Around the World Fact Sheet: 2006 U.S.-EU Summit  Today, President Bush met with the leadership of the European Union, Austrian Chancellor and European Council President Wolfgang Schüssel and European Commission President José Barroso. The leaders spoke about concrete actions the U.S. and EU can take to: Promote the Advance of Freedom and Democracy Around the World; Advance Cooperation to Secure our Homeland and the World; and, Promote Transatlantic Economic Integration and Energy Security. more

G8 SUMMIT

Rice, G8 Ministers Urge Restraint in Israel, Await Iran's Answer Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her foreign-minister counterparts within the Group of Eight (G8) have urged restraint in the Israeli-Palestinian confrontation and seek a formal response from Iran by July 5 on proposed nuclear talks. “It is extremely important that every party act responsibly so that the possibility of peace will be preserved,” Rice told reporters in Moscow on June 29 after discussing with other G8 foreign ministers the renewed confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians. Israel on June 28 launched a ground offensive into the Gaza Strip after Palestinian militants kidnapped an Israeli soldier. more

WTO TALKS

WTO Talks in Geneva End Without Solving Agricultural Access Issues World Trade Organization (WTO) meetings in Geneva have ended without a breakthrough on contentious agricultural issues, but U.S. officials pledged continued efforts to work toward a solution. "We remain fully committed to an ambitious, robust round that opens new markets for the world's farmers, manufacturers and service providers," U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab said in a statement issued after the Geneva talks concluded July 1. more

NORTH KOREA

NATO North Atlantic Council Statement on North Korea Missile Launch On July 5, the North Atlantic Council met in Brussels to express the Alliance's grave concern over North Korea 's (DPRK's) launch of a Taepodong-2 and other missiles. North Korea 's development, deployment and proliferation of ballistic missiles, missile-related materials, equipment, and technology pose a serious threat to the region and the international community at large. We regret and condemn this launch. This action will only further isolate North Korea from the international community and harm the interests of its people. more

US – Russia Relations

Cooperative Threat Reduction Agreement with Russia Extended The United States and Russia have signed a Protocol to extend for another seven year period the U.S.-Russia Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) Umbrella Agreement. The Agreement was concluded in 1992 under the leadership of President George H. W. Bush and Senators Lugar and Nunn, and first extended in 1999. CTR programs are a key tool used to deal with one of the gravest threats we face-- the danger that terrorists and proliferators could gain access to weapons or materials of mass destruction. Under the CTR programs, thousands of missiles and warheads have been deactivated. more

GUANTANAMO

Supreme Court Finds Military Commissions Unconstitutional President Bush said he will conform with the findings of the June 29 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that using military commissions to try Guantanamo detainees is unconstitutional. In the court's 5-3 decision, the ruling said these trials were illegal under U.S. military law and the Geneva Conventions. more

Hungary a Model for Iraq, Bush says in Budapest  Speaking on a hill from which Soviet forces fired on Budapest in 1956 to put down a 12-day-old revolution, President Bush extolled Hungary June 22 as a country that “represents the triumph of liberty over tyranny” and provides a model for emerging democracies in the Middle East, particularly Iraq. Earlier in the day, Bush laid flowers at a memorial to thousands of victims of the 1956 uprising. Bush noted the presence in the audience of some of those who participated in the uprising, which was crushed half a century ago by Soviet tanks and troops. “America honors your courage,” he said. “We've learned from your example, and we resolve that when people stand up for their freedom, America will stand with them.” more

President Bush to Visit Germany in Advance of G8 Summit At the invitation of Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Bush will travel to Germany in advance of the Group of Eight (G8) Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, the White House announced June 28. more

NATO Support for FIFA World Cup in Germany At the request of German national authorities, aircraft from the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force (NAEW&C Force) will provide airspace surveillance support during the FIFA World Cup in Germany from 7 June to 9 July. NATO has agreed to augment German air surveillance capability by providing additional low-level coverage and radio relay in order to contribute to security during the various ceremonies and football matches that will be held throughout the Championship. Since NATO started to give air surveillance support in 2001 as part of the Alliance ’s contribution to the defense against global terrorism, NAEW&C Force has been assigned this type of mission in more than 30 events, including the Winter Olympic Games in Turin in February 2006 and the Pope’s visit to Poland a few days ago.  more
