Secretary’s Remarks to the Press at Meeting of the North Atlantic Council I'm pleased to have engaged so far in very productive discussions with my NATO colleagues. I think that today's discussion and what we will do this afternoon demonstrates that NATO is truly a multilateral organization that is vibrant, that is a contributor to global security. It has European roots, of course, but if you look at what it is now doing -- it is involved in helping the people of Darfur; it is involved, as the Secretary General discussed, in Afghanistan, in training in Iraq -- this is an alliance that is indeed beginning to really meet the challenges of the 21st century. more

NATO Will Expand Security Forces in Afghanistan NATO foreign ministers agreed December 8 to expand the alliance's International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan by deploying 6,000 more troops into the southern region, according to a NATO communiqué. "When the expansion takes place next year, it will mean NATO is operating in three-quarters of the territory of Afghanistan," Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said during a press conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. more

NATO TRANSFORMATION

New Roles for a Transformed Alliance. Op-Ed by Victoria Nuland, U.S. Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Today, the focus of diplomats and soldiers at NATO headquarters in Brussels is on places that few Transatlanticists -- myself included -- could easily have found on a map 15 years ago. NATO, the 56-year-old military alliance that saw Europe and North America through the Cold War, has become a vital forum for Americans and Europeans to work together on our shared global agenda. more

Countering proliferation

Counter proliferation Requires Both Passive, Active Measures The State Department’s senior adviser on arms control says both offensive and defensive measures are needed to combat the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction successfully. Under Secretary of State Robert Joseph told an audience at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville December 9 that there is a broad range of diplomatic, economic, military and law enforcement capabilities available for this mission, including the application of sanctions and the use of missile defenses to stem the illegal proliferation of weapons, related technology and expertise. more
